Your needs, your medical profile, your age, whether you are taking medication, what is most practical for you and your concerns about protection against STIs are all factors that can guide your choice. How is an IUD inserted?
- If you opt to have an IUD installed when you consult the doctor, the latter will do a gynecological examination, a PAP test, a pregnancy test, and STBBI screening tests. Inserting the IUD carries certain risks, which the doctor will also discuss with you.
- After receiving negative results for these tests, the doctor will write you a prescription for the IUD, and you will make an appointment for installation. You will pick up the IUD at the pharmacy before showing up.
- Insertion of the IUD takes 20 to 30 minutes. You will be seated in a gynecological position, and the doctor will insert a speculum into your vagina in order to clearly see the cervix, on which he will spray an anesthetic. He will insert the IUD inside the uterus, through the cervix.
- We sometimes do a post-installation ultrasound to ensure positioning.
- Depending on the type used, the IUD can stay in place for 3 to 10 years. When it expires, it is the doctor who removes it, upon consultation in the office.
